Wednesday May 21st, 2003  - Ballina, NSW, Australia

2003  Trans Tasman Challenge

Australia v NZ

Day 1 - Longhaul

120km Long Haul, Ballina to Lennox Head (8 laps)

Conditions were near perfect for the first days racing - 200 metres out the swells had flattened out over night and gave the option of using a cleaver propeller. The surf was approx 2 metres with nice clean barrels that saw a few boats from both sides turning away from the larger sets.

The NZ Team suffered 4 flips, spun bushes and electrical problems in a number of boats (Team Aquarius Racing & Armour Linings had been leading the race).  The Aussie Team had a crewman taken to hospital with a nasty gash above the eye and another crew lady with a sprained arm.....but both will be back tomorrow.
