February 2nd, 2003 - Lake Karapiro, Waikato

Thundercats on Lake Karapiro

This is the third year now Thundercats have been invited to take part in the NZGP Hydroplanes Drivers Club raceday.  The day's entertainment is a mixture of boats on the lake, Formula 1 Tunnels, Modified Hydroplanes, Grand Hydroplanes and Ski Boats.

(
approx 170 miles per hour)

We had 3 races to run through the day.   This was a funday for us, so starting grids were very informal, with emphasis on giving some of the new crews experience at circuit racing.

While racing in surf is exciting, circuit racing can also provide the same levels of adrenalin.  Once these boats are ‘wound out’ they basically become low flying airplanes...  try and pull the tiller to turn the boat at the end of the straight and nothing happens!!!!!!!   You have to use the weight of the crew to get the boat to grab the water and get round the corner.

The guy’s running cleavers had to battle with the rest of the field running ‘bunny ears’ as the course was relatively short with a few tight turns.  Our 3 races were run with no incidents except for the end of the last race when one of the boats managed to flip on the turn.  No injuries, just big grins……and a few choice words.

Racing with Dave in ‘ZM’ was his lovely partner Amber. The 2 raced hard all-day and managing to place well up the field.  Amber even treated us to her new ‘wet look’, good on ya girl!!

Thank you to Alan Astrop once again for taking care of the RD duties and thank you to the NZ GP Hydroplane Drivers Club for inviting us.
