February 16th, 2003 - Long Bay Regional Beach, Auckland

'Have a Go' day

Once a year, traditional, new & extreme sports gather together to promote their sport and let everyone come and have-a-go!   This is the first year Thundercats have participated and we weren't quite prepared for the response we were in for!

After a big day racing at Pauanui the day before, we managed to get five boats to spend their Sunday driving round & round in circles a thousand times.   The queues were forming by 9am, mostly kids & teenagers with a few Mum’s & Dad’s tagging along.

The swell, which had hounded us at Pauanui too, produced a nice half metre shore break, and guaranteed a wet and wild start from the beach.  The younger ladies made their compulsory 'show us how loud you can scream' before setting off,  much to the amusement of the guys.

I had a hard time with some of the younger kids wanting to ride in the “Shark Boat” -  (Signtech has a shark with big teeth painted on the front of both pontoons) rather than mine, and had to resort to telling a few lies to get them to come with me -  'oh that guy drives like a Nana!'  It worked a few times until Mike kept overtaking me!

The queues were 50 deep at times and took about 40 minutes for some people to get their ride.   After burning about 50 litres of fuel each, we packed up and headed back to Browns Bay to our vehicles.
