April 13th, 2003 - Omanu Beach, Mt Maunganui

Top day at Omanu

It's been just 3 weeks since we ran the last round of the NZ Championship at Muriwai Beach.  For 3 months we've battled heavy surf at all venues, so by the end of the series were all feeling rather drained.  It was a welcome relief to be greeted today with nice gentle metre high surf and a flat back straight.  There was still the odd steep set to give some of the guy’s good air time but generally it was a day to relax a little and enjoy the surf.

Race Director for the day was Kelvin Kay, stepping in for Alan Astrop who was attending a meeting at the other end of the North Island with the New Zealand Powerboat Federation.

Racing began at 10.30am and ran smoothly with lessons learnt thru the Championship Series about getting your boat on the start line as soon as the ‘Blue Peter’ is raised.    No flips, bumps or incidents to report, just lots of good clean racing !!!

Winner for the day was ‘Matamata Motors’ with a tie for 2nd between ‘Armour Linings’ and ‘Signtech'.

Those boats involved in the Trans Tasman Challenge NZ Team will be packed into a shipping container in the next couple of weeks.   Our next raceday on May 3rd will be a ‘fun’ day - with opportunity for newer crews to skill up on righting an overturned boat & getting your motor running again etc.
