July 26th, 2003 - Orewa Beach

Orewa Club Day

Orewa is notorious for it’s flat water conditions but today gave us a good start to our 2003-04 season with a light onshore wind and steady, sometimes tricky, one metre wave.

The surf conditions cheated a few crews with one boat getting a clear run out to B Buoy while another would be caught by a set of breaking waves and go literally from first to last place.

 Those that have not been in a boat for a while had a few things to say about being stiff & sore after a fair day's racing with 5 heats each plus a final.

Only a few incidents to report - Marcel and fill-in co-pilot James managed to jump off a wave, nosedive into another sending driver Marcel for an acrobatic dip in the water.

The other 'note worthy' incident was Tony Vercauteren (rail rider) in Ezy Coupons, running on one pontoon for several seconds.  I think he was just testing the camera angles before sign writing the floor of his boat.

Hard luck stories of the day;

Radio Pacific pulled out after only two heats with electrical trouble
the new Build Smart boat had more than their fair share of “BUGGER” moments such as falling at the finish twice and hitting every big wave in the ocean etc.
0800Propellor had bad luck at the end of the day driving over E Buoy then getting run over in the next lap with no damage or injuries more boat room needed on the buoys.
Team Aquarius Racing went well with Kevin McKain having a spell at driving, until a broken prop-guard kept them out of the last heat & Final.

Welcome to Trudy first time in a Thundercat, co-driving with Kevin in Team Aquarius Racing.  Kevin was the perfect gentleman, keeping Trudy comfortable and dry all day - YEAH RIGHT!

Thanks to my helpers Rodney, Mike and Judi, they made the day run smooooth as silk for me.  The future will need a lot of organizing with the expectation of 40 plus boats on a race day.
