January 17th, 2004 - Papamoa Beach

Round 2 - NZ Thundercat Championships

'Oh I do like to be beside the seaside!'   It was a nice day, 1 metre choppy conditions with a steady onshore breeze most of the day.

No quarter asked nor given could describe some of the closer racing with a bit of contact here and there but with plenty of skill shown as overtaking was not easy on such flat water.  Driving ability has improved with next to no penalties during the day.

The movers and shakers of the day were: 'Build Smart' going from 25th to 15th, 'X-Box' up from 21st to 17th, 'Waikato Finance' from 17th to 11th, 'Dirty Dog' from 14th to 8th, 'Quicken' from 11th to 9th, 'Fletcher Reinforcing' from 7th to 6th and 'Radio Pacific' from 4th to 3rd.

Steve and Steve in 'Plumbquick' must have had a domestic between D & E buoys as one of them fell out (or was it a push!)  Kerry Wood in 'Quicken' racing in the final seemed to be racing on a different course to everyone else with a broken tiller arm causing him problems.  Both 'Takapuna Panelbeaters' and 'Location Homes 2' had hard luck with both their boats popping on the beach.  There is a feeling of apprehension when you hear that dull deep boom with every head on the beach turning to locate the poor bugger who has been dealt a cruel blow.

The top five boats are pulling away from the field with less than three hundred points between them.  The hot favourites must still be 'Waikato Sandblasting' on an unbeaten 900 points.  Who is going to challenge Greg and Kevin, with a good combination of luck and skill, to keep the top position?  Have any of the trailing boats got the magic mojo to catch them?  Who knows so keep tuned for the next thrilling episode.

Finally my thanks to all the officials – Ric, Rodney, Laura, Alfie, Mark, Wayne Green, Judi, Gail, Debbie and Chris from St. Johns.  Thanks to Kelvin for great race commentary and also to all the beach helpers, towing teams, pushers, shovers and diggers.
